updated packages:
lynx-2.8.5-ssl has been deleted & reinstalled because it
couldnt handle SSL connects (https://) anymore. this seems
to be a error in the ``portupgrade'' facility of F/BSD.
2004-02-23:
updated OS:
we updated the operating system from FreeBSD-4-STABLE (nov.2003)
to FreeBSD-4-STABLE (feb.2003) which means that a lot of bugfixes
as well as some local holes have been plumbed.
nntpcached is available again. set your $NNTPSERVER variable to
either ``localhost'' or to ``news.enemy.org'' which is a CNAME-RR
to ``s2.enemy.org''. happy reading/posting!

2004-01-18:
the 2.3mbps leased line was down today for approx. 2.5hrs. reason: unknown.
resetting the pairgain modem on our side and resync solved the problem.

2003-12-05:
installed a new version of mindterm. you will find it on the
main page (http://s2.enemy.org/). i left the old applet also online
in case somebody wants SSHv1 (or the v2 applet doesnt work).
news.enemy.org now points to the same IP-address as s2 itself. use
the news system if you like to. we get NNTP via news.individual.net
and the binaries groups via news.sil.at. please be sure to follow the
usual netnews netiquette. thanks!
local shell users of course
will like to seit their $NNTPSERVER to localhost. :-)
2003-11-28:
new co-admin of s2 is now "asf". a real programming beast :^)
2003-11-27:
new s2 machine online. upgrade from a AlphaServer400 (166mhz) to a
AlphaServer 1000A 5/333
with 333mhz and 512MB ram. if you are interested, read the
dmesg.
- the OS (FreeBSD-4STABLE, means actually 4.9 at the moment) has been
installed from scratch.
- all FreeBSD-ports have been tested and installed as on the old machine.
- user-quotas have been enabled again and set to 100MB per user.
- s2 now uses a 3 disk RAID5 containing of Atlas 10K SCA2 drives.
new hostname is now: s2.enemy.org.
(downtime was around 2hrs for shell access, 1hr for SMTP)
death to SCSI1. all disks have been retired to SCSI-heaven. we are
crusing now on SCSI3 (LVD/U2W) connected to a SCA2 backplane. cheerio!
2003-10-01:
new router is online (hostname: morex). we have now split the networks
into VLANs for more security. the new machine also has much more performance
than the old P166 box. quickspecs: VIA C3/500mhz CPU, 128MB ram.
2003-06-04:
upgrade of the LAN from a 8port unmanaged netgear switch to a
HP2524i (managed/speaks 802.1q...).
2003-01-30:
major portupgrade session with upgrades for i.e. stunnel,
ruby, pine, openssh-portable,libmcrypt,
irssi, epic, micq ...
2003-01-15:
upgraded the ZyXEL DSL modems to a unbundled copper line without coils.
we now have synchron 2.3mbps which should be enough for the shellbox.
2002-10-13:
upgraded the machine from FreeBSD-4.6.1R-p10 to
FreeBSD-4.7R. problems with this upgrade include wrong
file-permissions on /dev/null and /dev/zero as well
as restricted access to /dev/mem and /dev/kmem for
userspace tools. linux-emulation support on alpha doesnt seem stable
(kernel dump with: memory management error during upgrade process).
problems with the expat2 library - seems that the httpd was linked
against libexpat.so.2 but the major number is now 4 - fixed with a
symlink. downtime for users: 54min. our new kernel now can speak IPv6
and has VLAN support.
before:
- 2002: got new DSL modems (Pairgain S300)
- 2001: switched to a AlphaServer 400
- 1999-2000: served well and stable
- 1998: upgrade to a Multia Alpha machine - proved to be unstable
because of overheating. switched to a old SparcStation1+ (Weitek CPU UPGRADE!) and then later on to a "LogicStation20" (SparcStation20 ripoff)
- ?-1998: satan was a i486/133. online through Silver:Server Office
- before: satan was a local machine not connected to the internet
